» CHARACTER INFORMATION

Character NAME: Euphemia li Britannia

Canon & MEDIUM: Code Geass (Anime)

Canon PULL-POINT: Immediately after announcing the Special Administrative Zone of Japan at the Ashford Academy School Festival.

Character AGE: 16

Character ABILITIES: No special powers/supernatural abilities, nor any noted fighting or combat skills. However, she is capable of successfully piloting a Knightmare (giant robot).

Character HISTORY:

To understand Euphie's place in her world requires a brief understanding of the Holy Britannian Empire. In the Code Geass universe, the Holy Britannian Empire is the world's dominant military superpower, and rules over 1/3 of the world. When they take over a nation or group of nations, they designate it as an "Area", and refer to the people of that regin by their number. For example, Japan is Area 11, and all Japanese people are referred to as Elevens. All of the Britannian Empire is ruled by the royal Britannia family, and those who consider themselves native Britannians (this appears to be people with ancestry in the British Isles/who appear to be Anglo-Saxon in descent) look down upon "Numbers" who are not true Britannians.

Euphemia is one of the daughters of the 98th Emperor of Britannia. This makes her a princess who could potentially be able to rule over all of Britannia. Because of her rather fortunate birth, Euphie's childhood was relatively free of suffering, and she spent much of her time playing with her siblings. Euphie herself states in the series that while she did originally attend public school, she was forced to stop. Early in the events of the series, Euphemia is assigned as a Sub-Viceroy of Area 11 (Japan), which forced her to end her education.

Upon coming to Area 11, she meets one of the most important people in her life, Suzaku Kururugi. She happens upon him while trying to get out and see Area 11 undercover, and has him escort her to different places so she can see what Area 11 is like. After spending the day together, Suzaku unaware of her position, he shares his dream of a world without war with her. In return, after risking her life by running into the middle of a battle between giant robots, she asks him to help her in her quest to create that ideal world, and reveals herself as a Princess.

Soon after their meeting, Euphie happens to be taken hostage by Zero, a known terrorist leader that fights against Britannia. Unbeknownst to her, Zero is actually her older brother, Lelouch; but he unintentionally gives her a hint as to his identity when they have a conversation, and he seems to know her. Although he points a gun at her, he eventually decides against shooting her, and Euphemia is returned to safety. Her older sister Cornelia is concerned about her safety, as she had gotten into many dangerous situations after coming to Area 11, so she is asked to choose a knight to protect her. After battling with the controversy surrounding the racist atittude towards Elevens, Euphie decides to make Suzaku (who is Japanese, but considered an Honorary Britannian) her knight.

Later on, in the middle of a terrorist attack, Euphemia becomes stranded on an island near Area 11, along with several others. She runs into Zero, who she finally confirms is her brother Lelouch. The two of them spend a little time together, and she promises to keep his identity a secret. While she had previously thought Lelouch and their younger sister Nunnally were dead, she is happy to discover that both of them are currently secretly attending school under the name Lamperouge.

While Suzaku spends some time as her knight, he eventually decides he is not worthy of the position because he failed to protect her and disobeyed military orders (though it was entirely out of his control), and resigns. This throws Euphie into a depression, but after a meeting with one of Suzaku and Lelouch's classmates who admires her, she comes to the realization that she loves him. While Suzaku is in the middle of another fight, she patches through to him to command him to love her, and in return, she will love him as well. The two make up and Suzaku again becomes her knight.

She goes undercover as a civilian again to visit Lelouch and Nunnally during a school festival. However, she is caught by the media and almost trampled due to the excitement. Suzaku, who is in a robot, is able to lift her above the crowd, and she makes an announcement that shocks the crowd. She has decided to, using her power as a Princess and Sub-Viceroy, establish the Special Administrative Zone of Japan. Within this area, the Japanese people will again be allowed to call themselves Japanese, and some of their rights will again be restored to them. She has this idea approved by her older brother Schniezel after experiencing personal frustration at being regarded as a figurehead who is not capable enough to get involved in politics. She also feels it is a potential way to begin to make the world a peaceful place. This is the point which she will be taken from.

Character PERSONALITY:

Outwardly, Euphie is kind, cheerful and sweet to everyone around her. Despite her position as a Britannian princess (in a regime run by many people who are extremely racist towards anyone who is not Britannian), she treats everyone as her equal, and occasionally conceals the fact that she's a princess/goes undercover as a civilian in order to be treated the same as everyone else. She loves her siblings dearly (especially her older sister Cornelia, her older half-brother Lelouch, and her younger half-sister Nunnally), and goes to great lengths to help them whenever possible. When she cannot help (which is often, since her position as a Sub-Viceroy is pretty much in title only), she gets very frustrated.

Euphie is also very impulsive and reckless, which can be problematic for those who must bend to her whims. For example, she decided on a whim to ask Suzaku to be her official protector (her Knight) -- because Suzaku was a different (oppressed) nationality than her, the choice was considered scandalous by many and earned her a lot of scorn. However, she does not regret the decisions that she makes, and puts her all into everything she does. This especially applies to helping other people. She often throws herself into the middle of dangerous fights to get a result.

However, she is also extremely naive and innocent, sometimes to a fault. She is very idealistic, and her ideas about the world are far more optimistic than the reality she lives in. As a princess, she has been sheltered from much of the suffering and misfortune around her, and has lived in privilege all her life. Because of this, she struggles with reconciling between the bigoted attitude she grew up around, and the fact that people are being treated cruelly. She is not above using her title or status as a princess and a Britannian to help someone or stop a senseless act of violence, but because of her privilege and nationality, she may end up offending them or appear to have a "Britannian savior complex" of sorts.

Beneath her bright and cheerful exterior lies a darker interior. Her self-esteem is not particularly great, and at her worst/most depressed she actively thinks about how she hates herself. She often feels as though she is not a help to her siblings and friends, and this state of mind often causes her to place her friends and family before herself and her needs. She would easily allow a friend to say a lot of terrible things about her or treat her badly, if she thought that it meant she could help them. Much of her actions in the series are motivated by the desire to help her close friends, though they may also benefit others in the end.

» EXSILIUM INFORMATION

Chosen WEAPON: A rapier! If possible, I'd like to have it work so that when she touches someone with the tip of the rapier, it will heal an injury. It would only be able to heal very small injuries like a scrape to begin with, but as it evolves it will be able to fix bigger wounds and broken bones. (Obviously, it wouldn't be able to bring people back from the dead or anything like that, just fix wounds quicker than they would by themselves.) If that's not okay then I can think of something else :)

Character INVENTORY: She'll just have the clothes on her back.
